Why does an annual service matter if nothing is wrong?
Two reasons. Almost every manufacturer makes annual servicing a condition of the warranty, so skipping it can cost you a free repair. And a service catches the things that are slowly going wrong, a tired expansion vessel, a dirty heat exchanger, poor combustion, while they are still cheap to put right.
What is included in a service?
For a boiler we check combustion and flue performance, clean what needs cleaning, test the controls and safety devices, check the system pressure and water quality and leave a written record. Heat pumps, cylinders and plant rooms each have their own checklist. We tell you what we found, not just that it passed.
Do you service heat pumps?
Yes. As MCS certified installers we service air source heat pumps, including the refrigerant circuit checks, the water side, filters, controls and flow temperature settings. Heat pumps need less attention than a boiler, but the settings are where the running cost is won or lost.
Can you take over a system you did not install?
Yes, and a lot of our maintenance work is exactly that. The first visit takes a little longer because we survey the system properly and record what is there, and after that we know it as well as anything we fitted ourselves.
What happens if something breaks down between visits?
Call us. We will diagnose it and tell you honestly whether it is a repair or whether replacement is the better use of your money. We do not fit parts on a hunch, and we do not condemn appliances that can be fixed.
How do I know when my service is due?
We keep the records and get in touch when the date is approaching. Landlords in particular tell us that this is the part they value most, because an expired gas safety certificate is a legal problem rather than an inconvenience.
Do you work outside normal hours?
For commercial buildings, yes. Shops, restaurants and offices often need the work done before opening or after closing, and we plan the visits around that rather than around us.
Do you work on commercial buildings?
Yes, and a large part of our work is commercial. We hold the accreditations needed to design, install and certify commercial heating, hot water and gas plant, and we have completed projects in schools and churches as well as offices, restaurants, care homes, hospitals, apartment blocks and multi occupancy buildings. We are used to working in occupied buildings and will plan the work around term times, services and opening hours.
