Tonbridge has a broader mix of housing than its neighbours: Victorian terraces near the station and the High Street, inter war and post war semis spreading out from the town, modern estates on the edges, and older cottages and farm properties in the surrounding villages. The right heat pump design looks quite different in each of them.
Why Tonbridge homes suit a heat pump
The practical advantage in Tonbridge is that so much of the housing is neither very old nor very new. Post war and inter war houses usually have workable pipework, cavity walls that can be insulated cheaply if they are not already, and enough outside space for a unit. That combination tends to produce a straightforward installation and a low flow temperature, which is where the running cost savings actually come from.

Common questions from Tonbridge homeowners
We are near the river. Does flood risk affect the installation?
It affects where things go rather than whether you can have one. Parts of Tonbridge sit in the Medway flood plain, and in those properties we mount the outdoor unit higher on a raised plinth or wall brackets and keep the electrics above the likely flood level. It is worth telling us at survey if your property has flooded before.
Our house is a 1930s semi. What normally needs changing?
Usually two or three radiators in the coldest rooms, a new cylinder, and occasionally a section of pipework. The walls are often cavity and can be insulated inexpensively if that has not been done. We measure each room rather than assuming, and give you the list before you commit.
Can we keep our existing hot water cylinder?
Usually not. Cylinders fitted for a gas boiler have a small coil designed for much hotter water, so they reheat very slowly on a heat pump. We check the coil rating at survey and tell you honestly whether yours can stay.
Is underfloor heating worth adding at the same time?
If you are already lifting floors or extending, yes. Underfloor heating covers a huge surface area, so it warms the room at a very low flow temperature, which is exactly what makes a heat pump efficient. We install both and can design them together.
What happens if it breaks down in winter?
You call us and we come out. We install, commission and maintain our own systems rather than handing you to a call centre, and because we hold the design and commissioning records we usually know what we are looking for before we arrive.
